What is a domain name? A domain name is your web address. When someone types your domain name into a web browser, your web pages will open. Behind the scenes, the domain name is actually pointing to a physical location - a server - that holds your web page files. The purpose of domain names is to allow ordinary users connected to the Internet to find websites and send email to addresses with familiar names such as "webcentralx.com" or "nicmar.biz" without having to memorize the numerical addresses that actually locate the computers or servers on the Internet. [top] What is a Top Level Domain (TLD)? A Top Level Domain (TLD) is the suffix that is attached to the end of a domain name. For instance, in the domain name nerraw.com, ".com" is the TLD. There are two types of top-level domains: global and country code. Global Top Level Domains (gTLD) were created to be used by the Internet public, while country code Top Level Domains (ccTLD) were created to be used by each individual country, as they deemed necessary. The original global Top Level Domains are .com, .net and .org. In September 2001, .biz and .info were added to the existing three. County code Top Level Domains (ccTLD) include .com.my (Malaysia), .co.uk (United Kingdom), .cc and .tv. [top] Why do I need a domain name? A domain name is the address to your web site. You will need this address for people to access your website. [top] How much does registering a domain name cost? The cost for a domain name registration depends on the Top Level Domain. Please visit our website for our latest prices or click here for more details. [top] I thought I could only register domains through Network Solutions / InterNIC? The short answer: ICANN opened up the registration process to other registrars in 2000 and the domain name registration system is now open to other companies besides Network Solutions / InterNIC. The long answer: In 1992, Network Solutions, Inc. (NSI) was granted an exclusive contract by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to be the sole registrar for .com, .net and .org Top Level Domain (TLD) names. NSI also maintained the central database of assigned names called WHOIS. In 1997, the U.S. Department of Commerce along with the Clinton Administration dismantled NSI's monopoly and mandated the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), a non-profit organization, to create and implement plans for an open, competitive market for registrations of .com, .net and .org domain names. Today, accredited ICANN registrars can register and renew existing .com, .net and .org domain names, performing the same functions as Network Solutions but with better prices and service! [top] What is the difference between a domain registered through you and one registered through Network Solutions? There are a lot of difference. By registering with us, you will receive a list of additional services. This extra services comes bundled with every domain name registration through us at no extra charge. Our prices are much lower too! [top] Are you ICANN accredited? No. We are however a partner of an ICANN accredited provider. [top] Can anyone register a domain name? Yes, it does not matter whether you are an individual or a company. [top] What restrictions are there for choosing a domain name? The only valid characters for domain names are letters, numbers and hyphens "-". Other characters such as underscores "_" or exclamation points "!" cannot be used. Also, the domain name cannot begin with a hyphen. Domain names can have a maximum of 67 characters, including the Top Level Domain (this means 63 characters before the dot). We do not recommend very long web addresses, as they are difficult to remember and are more prone to typing errors. [top] Is there a limit to the number of domain names a person can have? So far there is no restriction. [top] How long does the registration take? This depends on your payment method. If you pay via credit card or if you have an account with sufficient funds in it then your order will be processed instantly. Otherwise, we can only process your order upon receipt of your payment. Like our sales and support team, our billing team works 24x7 and your order is usually processed within minutes of receiving your payment. [top] Do I own the domain I register? Yes, it is legally yours to use, sell or keep as long as it does not infringe on a trademark. Registrants who impinge on the rights of others may lose their domain names through either ICANN's Uniform Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) or legal action. [top] Who will be listed as the registrant / owner of the domain name? It is our policy to register the domain to you, so you will be listed as the legal owner, with full rights to administer the domain name. Please be wary of some other registrars / web hosting companies who register themselves as the legal owner of a domain name you purchase through them. [top] How will I know if my choice of domain name is available? You can use our whois search located above of every page to check. Please keep in mind that domain name availability can change quickly, as someone else could register the name at any time. [top] WHOIS search shows a domain with an expired date. Can I register it? Although WHOIS may show an expired date, a domain cannot be registered until it is deleted from the root registry database. There is not a certain time period for the deletion. That usually depends on the registrar and on average takes several weeks to a few months. If the domain name belongs to you, you can renew it with your existing registrar; otherwise you will have to wait until it is deleted. An expired domain name cannot be transferred to another registrar. Please refer to our Transfer section for further details on domain transfers. [top] What is WHOIS? WHOIS is a tool to retrieve the registration information of a domain name, including the registrant's name, contact information, and record creation date. You can perform a WHOIS search on the top right hand side of every page at WEBcentralx.com. [top] What are your Terms of Services? Youll be presented with and have to agree to our terms of services agreement upon signing up for premium web hosting with us. A copy of our terms of services agreement can be viewed by clicking here. [top] What is domain parking? Every registered domain name must be pointed to a real server physically located somewhere. In case your website is not ready yet, we offer our servers for you to "park" your domains. This enables you to register and reserve your domain name (before somebody else does!) and keep it parked at our servers until you are ready to use it. We offer free parking services for as long as your domain is registered with us. I am not from Malaysia, can I register with your company? Of course. Prices for international customers are in US Dollars. [top] When I register my domain, don't I need to provide my DNS or nameserver information? When you register, your domain name is automatically parked at our servers. Whenever you like to use your own DNS or nameservers, or want to transfer your domain to a web hosting company, just login to the Domain Manager and click on the "Nameservers" link to change the nameservers. [top] What is a nameserver? A nameserver is a computer that contains a list of domain names and the associated IP addresses. When a domain name is typed in a web browser, the nameserver associates that with the IP address and the correct web site opens in the web browser. [top] Can I change my domain name later? You cannot change your domain name but can have additional domain names pointing to the same site. [top] I've misspelled my domain name / I no longer want my domain name, can I get a refund? As per ICANN regulations (www.icann.org) domain name registrations are not refundable and there is no way of correcting a spelling mistake with the domain name once it is registered. Please ensure that you have spelt your domain correctly before placing the order. This regulation is made to protect you - otherwise speculators and cyber squatters will just register every possible domain, get a refund after 30 days, and register it again! [top] Are your charges monthly or yearly? Charges for all of our services are yearly (per calendar year). [top] I have registered my domain name, what do I do next? You can start using all the features provided at your domain name admin. If you want to have a website or email server at that domain then you need to find a web hosting company to host your website. If you just want to reserve the domain name for future use, you do not have to do anything. [top] Does my account come with web hosting? No. However we do offer web hosting services. Click here to view the details. [top] Do you provide web hosting services? Yes we do! Please click here for details of our web hosting services. [top] I registered my domain today, paid and received a confirmation that it had been processed, but when I do a WHOIS it says my domain is available. The WHOIS database is only updated once in about 24 to 48 hours, so your domain will continue to show as 'available' until the next update. However, rest assured that it is registered and cannot be taken by somebody else. [top] Can I sell or transfer ownership of my domain? Yes, you can. [top] What is the difference between MYNIC and INTERNIC? Domain names registered with MYNIC (the Malaysian domain registration administrator) will end with .MY (i.e. webcentralx.com.my). Only Malaysian-based organizations registered with ROC, ROS, MOE, or ROB are eligible to apply for a domain name my MYNIC. Domain names registered with INTERNIC (the international domain registration administrator) will end with .com, .net, or .org (i.e. webcentralx.com). INTERNIC registration is open to all individuals, businesses, and organizations. [top] What is the difference between .com, .net, .org, etc? INTERNIC places no restrictions on the registration of .com, .net, and .org domain names. Domain names ending with a .com were initially intended for commercial web sites, but the popularity of .com has caused it to be used by all types of web sites. .net domain names imply a network provider, while .org implies an organization.
